ISDN Facts - Pricing
Being
a telco product, it is priced in much the same way as their other traditional services.
Telcos charge a monthly fee for a business or residential line. In the case of ISDN
you can pay for up to 6 lines at a higher monthly rates than business lines. Good
quality video requires 384 kbs, or 6 isdn lines linked together.
If you call someone on your residential or business line in another city, you pay
a per minute or long distance charge, as we refer to it. The same applies to ISDN,
except now you are paying for up to 6 long distance charges at rates that are far
higher than regular long distance charges. With carriers having a near monopoly on
ISDN calling, rates are far higher than for traditional long distance.
What does it cost?
In
short, a lot. So much so that companies wanting to realize the benefits of video
conferencing buy expensive end point equipment but seldom use it, or ration it out
to only the senior management in their organizations. Rather than being a tool for
all within the organization to use, it is rationed out to only a select few. Moving
this traffic over to an IP network is the only way to go. With 97% of the world still
using ISDN video, it's imperative that organizations still be able to connect with
customers and other corporate sites not on the IP backbone.
In many cases moving even 4 or 5 hours per month of ISDN video calling to your IP
network will more than justify the cost of the network.
